The Director of the Global Democracy Programs at the McCain Institute says deteriorating relations between the United States and Georgia’s ruling party should come as no surprise, citing Georgian Dream’s consistent hostile rhetoric toward Washington and its allies.
Based on the statement, Georgian Dream has for years pursued a pattern of publicly insulting the United States and its traditional partners while simultaneously moving closer to what were described as the West’s principal adversaries.
“This should come as no surprise to Georgian Dream, given its persistent pattern of insulting the United States and its traditional allies while simultaneously drawing closer to the West’s principal adversaries,” the Director said.
Under these circumstances, the McCain Institute representative questioned the rationale for continued engagement by US officials with the current Georgian leadership.
“It is reasonable to ask why US leaders would engage with a government that has disparaged American ambassadors, accused the United States of attempting to open a ‘second front,’ and aligned itself with forces that openly promote anti-American rhetoric,” the statement noted.
The remarks reflect growing concern among US policy circles regarding Georgia’s foreign policy trajectory and its impact on bilateral relations with the United States.
