The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has confirmed that Georgia was not invited to the recent EU ministerial meeting, underscoring growing tensions between Brussels and Tbilisi over Georgia’s political trajectory. Speaking after the meeting, Kallas said discussions on visa suspension measures for Georgia are expected to take place later this year.
“As you know, we have proposed several measures under different sanction regimes. So far, we have not been able to finalize them because not all member states have been supportive,” she stated.
Kallas added that the European Commission is preparing to present its visa suspension mechanism in the coming months which will include potential amendments to visa regulations affecting certain groups. “It is not my direct competence, so I will not comment in detail,” she noted.
Her comments come amid a deteriorating relationship between the EU and Georgia, highlighted by the recall of the German ambassador, Peter Fischer, for consultations after months of pressure and personal attacks from Tbilisi’s pro-Russian leadership.
