Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire in Gaza, marking the first major breakthrough in months of devastating conflict. The truce, reached under a peace initiative devised by US President Donald Trump, is set to begin immediately, and will include the release of hostages and prisoners as part of its initial phase.

Trump, who personally briefed families of Israeli hostages, assured them that their loved ones would return home as early as Monday. “This is the first step toward peace,” he said, emphasizing that the deal lays the groundwork for broader negotiations between the two sides.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu hailed the agreement as “a great day for Israel,” confirming that his government would formally approve the ceasefire. He praised the US role in securing the deal, calling it a turning point for regional stability.

In Gaza, thousands of Palestinians poured into the streets to celebrate the announcement. The truce was met with scenes of jubilation, with residents waving flags and chanting in anticipation of a long-awaited respite from the violence.

The ceasefire’s first phase focuses on humanitarian measures — including the exchange of captives and the easing of restrictions — while further steps in the peace plan are expected to address long-standing political and territorial disputes.

International reactions are still emerging, but analysts say the deal could mark a rare moment of convergence between Israeli and Palestinian leadership, albeit under immense international pressure and with fragile prospects for long-term stability.
