The issue of Georgia is being discussed today at the plenary session in the European Parliament. A statement about Georgia will be given by the High Representative of the European Union/Vice President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell.
The topic of the debate is: “Democratic regression and the threat of political pluralism in Georgia”.
According to the information posted on the website of the European Parliament, MEPs, together with Josep Borrell, will discuss the deterioration of democracy in Georgia before the vote on the resolution on this issue scheduled for Thursday.
“As the country prepares for parliamentary elections on October 26, concerns have been raised about the increasingly authoritarian policies of the ruling Georgian Dream party, particularly regarding media freedom and LGBTQ+ rights. Although Georgia was granted EU candidate status in December 2023, the party has faced criticism for cracking down on pro-democracy protests and introducing a law that labels Western-funded media and NGOs as ‘foreign agents.’ If Georgian Dream wins a significant majority in the upcoming elections, there is a fear that the multi-party system and political pluralism in Georgia will be under even greater threat,” the information of the European Parliament states.
