The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia will establish a dedicated sectoral council for apple producers, as part of a new initiative to strengthen one of the country’s main agricultural industries.
Minister Davit Songulashvili presented the plan during a meeting with apple growers and exporters, emphasizing the sector’s growing importance for both domestic supply and export expansion.
Under the initiative, the council will serve as a platform for identifying industry challenges, sharing updates and coordinating targeted support measures. Meetings will be held monthly under the supervision of a deputy minister, with quarterly sessions chaired by the minister.
“Regular, systematic engagement with farmers is essential to properly identify sector-wide challenges and respond effectively,” Songulashvili said, noting that the format is expected to improve policy design and ensure that farmers’ needs are reflected in development programs.
The ministry stated that apple production in Georgia has shown consistent growth in recent years and remains a major component of the agricultural economy. Production is concentrated primarily in the Shida Kartli region, with additional output from Mtskheta-Mtianeti and Kakheti, indicating a gradual geographic diversification of the sector.
In 2025, Georgia exported approximately 20,600 tonnes of apples at an average price of $0.68 per kilogram, generating around $14 million in revenue. Main export destinations include Russia, Türkiye, Armenia and Kazakhstan.
