Georgia’s national football team ended its World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1:2 defeat to Bulgaria in Sofia, in the final sixth-round match held at Levski Stadium.
The game was decided in the first half, where Bulgaria scored twice. Although Georgia dominated possession, the hosts created the more dangerous chances.
Rusev opened the scoring with a striking shot in the 10th minute, and in the 24th minute Krastev doubled the lead after another sharp counterattack—both goals following Dimitrov’s active play.
Georgia reduced the deficit late in the match: in the 88th minute, Luka Lochoshvili scored after a cross into the box, but the visitors were unable to equalize in the remaining time.
With this result, Willy Sagnol’s team finishes the qualifying stage in third place with 3 points. Bulgaria takes fourth. Spain secured first place and a direct ticket to the World Cup after a 2:2 draw with Turkey, while second-placed Turkey will compete in the playoffs.
