Gakharia’s Party: We won’t participate in Prosecutor’s Office protection of corrupt GD members

“Today, it was confirmed once again that the main investigative agency responsible for the fight against corruption – the Prosecutor’s Office, instead of protecting the citizens of Georgia from corruption, is fighting to protect the Georgian Dream representatives involved in corruption,” deputy chairwoman of ‘For Georgia’ party, Natia Mezvrishvili, said at a special briefing.

Mezvrishvili emphasized that former prime minister Giorgi Gakharia’s party will not participate in “activities planned by the Prosecutor’s Office for the protection of those corrupt members of the Georgian Dream party.”

“By attempting to justify the non-initiation of an investigation into facts of corruption, with illegal procedures (which has been the case today) the Prosecutor’s Office is complicit in covering up a crime.

“We are fighting systemic corruption and we will not become complicit in the crime – we will not participate in activities planned by the Prosecutor’s Office that seeks to protect the corrupted members of GD!

“Our team will provide information on each case of corruption to the relevant law-enforcement agencies within the framework of the official, already started investigation!

“The Prosecutor’s Office conducts illegal procedures, aimed at covering up the Kaladze-Kobakhidze duo and other even more corrupt persons of GD, and creating favorable conditions for systemic corruption,” she said.

“On August 30, the Prosecutor’s Office summoned us to take part in the protection of the corrupt persons after 5 months, based on the statement made by us on the fact of corrupt constructions, which posed a direct threat to the lives and health of our citizens. The Prosecutor’s Office seeks to delay the investigation, although it had an obligation to start 5 months ago.

“We remind the Georgian Dream and the Prosecutor’s Office – the Prosecutor’s Office has the obligation to start an investigation into any crime! All procedures carried out before the official investigation commences are illegal! We call on the Prosecutor’s Office and GD to abide by the law, initiate an investigation, appoint a hearing of the Prosecutor General in Parliament, and submit a report to the citizens on the fight against corruption,” Mezvrishvili stated.
