The European Parliament is set to vote on a report on Georgia presented by MEP Rasa Juknevičienė, based on the information published on the European Parliament’s website.
The report was approved by the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs on May 5, receiving 53 votes in favor and 14 against.
The draft document expresses the European Parliament’s “full solidarity with the Georgian people,” stating that they continue to fight for “a European and democratic Georgia” against the backdrop of what it describes as democratic backsliding, growing repression, hostile rhetoric, disinformation campaigns, and threats.
Based on the report, Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream, has moved the country away from its European integration path.
“The Georgian Dream not only stopped, but actually changed the course of Georgia’s European integration,” the draft report states.
The document is expected to address recent political developments in Georgia, concerns over democratic governance, the rule of law, media freedom, and the country’s stalled European Union accession process.
The report comes against the backdrop of strained relations between Tbilisi and Brussels following the adoption of a number of controversial laws and the suspension of Georgia’s EU accession process. European institutions have repeatedly expressed concern over democratic standards in the country, while the Georgian government has accused some European officials of political bias and interference in domestic affairs.
Although European Parliament reports are not legally binding, they are regarded as an important indicator of the Parliament’s political position and can influence broader EU policy discussions regarding Georgia and its future relations with the bloc.
