Death toll in landslide-hit Shovi rises to 22

The death toll in the landslide-ravaged Shovi resort of the Oni Municipality rose to 22, said Temur Mgebrishvili, Head of the Emergency Situations Management Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA).

One more body was found in the Rioni riverbed on August 11. According to Mgebrishvili, 11 people are still missing, and rescue efforts continue.

Oni Mayor Sergo Khidesheli said that the area of rescue efforts has been expanded to include Chanchakhi Gorge. He added that the Oni Municipality would cover the burial expenses and once again expressed condolence to the families of the Shovi tragedy victims.

A deadly landslide struck the resort on August 3. Georgia observed a Day of Mourning on August 7.
