Armenia rep at the UN explains Yerevan’s support towards Georgia’s resolution on IDPs

The representative of Armenia at the UN, Mher Margarian, explained the historical position of Armenia, supporting the resolution initiated by Georgia against Russia, which refers to the need to return the displaced persons to the Tskhinvali region and Abkhazia.

Mher Margarian said on June 4 in New York, at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, that Armenia supports resolving conflicts peacefully, within the framework of international rules and laws, and this is Yerevan’s long-standing position.

He also reaffirmed his support for fundamental human rights, including those affected by the conflict and forced to leave their homes.

He claimed that Armenia emphasizes its full support for the territorial integrity of Georgia in the spirit outlined in the strategic partnership agreement established between Tbilisi and Yerevan in January 2024.

“In this regard, Armenia supports the return of IDPs to South Ossetia and Abkhazia in accordance with international humanitarian legislation,” said the representative of Armenia to the United Nations.

The strategic cooperation agreement between Armenia and Georgia was signed at the beginning of this year during Nikol Pashinyan’s visit to Tbilisi. The prime minister of Georgia at that time was Irakli Garibashvili.

China, the second new strategic partner of Georgia, abstained from participating in the UN resolution “On the status of internally displaced persons and refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia” and therefore did not support it.

This year, 103 states supported the resolution (last year, 100 states supported it), which is the highest number recorded so far.

Russia and eight of its allies, including Belarus, Syria and North Korea, voted against the resolution, while 52 countries abstained from voting, including Iran, where Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze recently visited.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Ilia Darchiashvili, thanked the countries that supported the resolution supporting the territorial integrity of Georgia on Twitter.
