NCDC Head on ‘Delta’ Strain: It’s Recommended that Parents be Vaccinated Twice

Amiran Gamkrelidze, head of the National Center for Disease Control stated that if herd immunity is formed prior to the fifth wave, and if a million vaccinations are done in October, the fifth or subsequent wave will be relatively easy.

As Gamkrelidze notes, the fifth and then sixth waves are expected, because viral infections have a cyclical course. He highlighted that in the second half of October, the season of respiratory viruses usually begins in Georgia, and corona is also a respiratory virus.

“For the fifth wave, we need to call on each to wear face masks – the biggest defensive mechanism, and wearing masks should reach 95%. In this case, we will save 200-250 lives by December. If 1000 people are vaccinated twice, it is one saved life, therefore if herd immunity is formed for the fifth wave and it will be possible to do a million vaccinations in October, the fifth or next wave will be relatively easy. The most important thing is to have herd immunity in the country against covid and wear face masks,” he said.
