A Tbilisi court has found activist Vaso Beridze guilty of an administrative offence following his detention during a protest held near the Tbilisi City Assembly.
Judge Tornike Kapanadze imposed a fine of GEL 5,000 on Beridze.
Beridze was among 10 people detained during the rally. The other detainees were Tornike Toshkhua, Mariam Mekanchishvili, Ia Melitauri, Nato Bolkvadze, Sandro Sekhniashvili, Lasha Dgebuadze, Marine Nanava, Tornike Tikaradze and Shako Baghdoshvili.
Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs says the demonstrators were detained for displaying banners containing what the ministry described as “insulting content.”
The detainees were charged under Articles 166 and 173 of Georgia’s Code of Administrative Offenses, which relate to petty hooliganism and resistance to law enforcement officers.
