Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has expressed deep condolences following the passing of His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, describing his legacy as one that extends far beyond the spiritual sphere.
In an official statement, Kobakhidze emphasized the Patriarch’s wisdom, compassion, boundless patience, and remarkable capacity for forgiveness, noting that these qualities helped strengthen faith in the hearts of generations of Georgians.
“On behalf of all Georgians, I extend my condolences on the passing of our nation’s spiritual father, His Holiness Ilia II. With his passing, a great era in the history of our Mother Church and the Georgian state has come to an end. The Patriarch’s shepherding coincided with some of the most challenging and transformative years in our country’s history. Throughout this journey, he remained the spiritual leader of the nation and a symbol of unity,” the Prime Minister stated.
He further noted that Ilia II’s service was not limited to the Church, underlining his vital role in preserving Georgia’s national identity, safeguarding traditions, and strengthening statehood.
“Through his selfless service to God, the homeland, and the people, he has secured an eternal place among the greatest figures in our centuries-long history,” Kobakhidze added.
The Prime Minister also extended condolences to the Georgian Apostolic Autocephalous Orthodox Church, the Holy Synod, clergy, and the faithful, calling on current and future generations to preserve the Patriarch’s legacy.
His Holiness Ilia II passed away at the age of 93. A period of national mourning has been declared across Georgia as the country honors one of its most influential spiritual leaders.
