EU and 50 countries condemn Russian violation of Estonian airspace

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna delivered a joint statement on behalf of the European Union and 50 countries, including Georgia, at the UN Security Council, denouncing the violation of Estonian airspace by Russian fighter jets.

Tsahkna claimed that Russia’s “reckless actions” constitute not only a breach of international law but also a dangerous escalation that pushes the region closer to conflict.

On 19 September 2025, three armed Russian MiG-31 fighter jets penetrated nearly 100 kilometres into Estonian territory, remaining in NATO airspace for 12 minutes and approaching Tallinn. It marked the fourth such incursion this year and followed earlier Russian drone violations of Polish and Romanian airspace.

“The incident concerns not only Estonia, but the entire international community,” the statement read, stressing that Russia’s provocations undermine global efforts to end the war in Ukraine and restore peace.

The joint statement, endorsed by Albania, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, EU member states, and others, urged Moscow to cease its aggression against Ukraine and end provocations against neighbouring countries.

Estonia has formally requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to address the incident, with Tsahkna emphasizing that even a Permanent Member of the Council must be held accountable for violating international peace and security.
