A newly constructed two-lane tunnel connecting University Street and Petre Kavtaradze Street via Mikheil Shavishvili Street has officially opened to traffic in Tbilisi’s Vake district.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, and the Chairman of the City Assembly (Sakrebulo).
Mayor Kaladze described the project as “another significant infrastructure achievement” for the capital, thanking his team, the national government, and the construction companies for their collaboration. “I am confident our capital will become even more organised, greener, and more beautiful. While many successful projects are behind us, we are undeterred by the challenges that remain,” he said.
The project includes modern LED lighting, new sidewalks, and upgraded communication and drainage systems.
Tbilisi City Hall reports that the tunnel construction and rehabilitation of Shavishvili Street were funded with GEL 15 million from the city budget. The development is expected to ease congestion, improve traffic flow, and reduce travel time in the area.
