Personal sanctions and restrictions on visa-free travel – EU ministers’ agenda on Georgia

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, says that two issues regarding Georgia will be discussed at today’s meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

The Foreign Ministers of the European Union countries will discuss personal sanctions (of representatives of the “Georgian Dream”) and the issue of restricting the visa-free regime.

“The developments that we are currently seeing in Georgia are not going in the direction that the candidate countries should be going,” Kaja Kallas noted ahead of the meeting.

“So we are going to discuss the consequences of the Georgian authorities’ use of repression against the opposition and all the tools that they are using there. So we are going to discuss what can we do from the European side. One issue is, of course, sanctions, and the other issue is also restrictions on visa-free travel,” Kaja Kallas added.

The Council of Foreign Ministers of the European Union countries began today. In addition to Georgia, it will also discuss the processes in Syria and the war in Ukraine.
