In the scope of Tbilisi’s metro refinement project, Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced a tender for 97 metro wagons that meet modern standards. The initiative, financed by the Georgian government and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), aims to renovate the city’s subway system.

The project, with a EUR 200 million budget, will last for seven years, with the first set of new wagons expected to arrive by 2026. The city is projected to get 22 new trains by 2030. These new trains will consist of 13 four-carriage vehicles and 9 with five carriages. The Akhmeteli-Varketili line will be assigned five-carriage trains to boost passenger capacity.

Mayor Kaladze emphasized the growing demand for metro services as the reason for the upgrade project, while the new trains will meet international criteria.
