Partnership for Human Rights [PHR] reacted to the murder of transgender woman, Kesaria Abramidze, and noted that for years political homophobia and sowing gender inequality has been the agenda of the country’s ruling political force and its media, which fuels violence. PHR further claimed that the crime that happened yesterday is the result of the aforementioned circumstances:
“First of all, Partnership for Human Rights expresses deep sorrow and condolences to Kesaria’s family. At the same time, we call on the law enforcement agencies to conduct an effective investigation of the case and conduct all necessary investigative actions in a fair manner.
“We would also like to point out that political homophobia and sowing of gender inequality has become the agenda of the country’s ruling political force for years. Official media outlets also actively produce homophobic propaganda, use hate speech and in this way stir up violence in society. It is the result of the aforementioned circumstances that led to yesterday’s gruesome murder, as well as, in general, the crimes committed against queer groups and cases of femicide in recent years. ” said the statement of the organization.
Kesaria Abramidze, a transgender model and public figure, was killed at her apartment in Didi Dighomi last night and an investigation has begun, presuming the case to be a murder under Article 108 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
Beka Jaiani, 27, has been taken into custody for the murder of 37-year-old model.
Law enforcement detained Jaiani soon after the crime and retrieved a knife as the murder weapon.
