MIA stops investigation into the case of artist Sandro Sulaberidze due to absence of evidence

The Ministry of Internal Affairs stopped the investigation into the criminal case against the artist Sandro Sulaberidze.

According to the statement issued by the ministry, there were no signs of crime, so the investigation was stopped.

“On February 4, 2023, the Ministry of Internal Affairs received a report about the theft of a piece of modern art from the exhibition space of the National Gallery of Georgia. The relevant services started the investigation under Article 177, Part 2 of the Criminal Code.

Investigative activities were conducted within the framework of the case. Due to the absence of evidence of a crime, after the implementation of relevant procedural and investigative actions, the investigation of the case was stopped,” reads the statement.

Sandro Sulaberidze was a participant in the exhibition “self-portrait before a mirror” organized by the National Gallery of Georgia. During the exhibition, he removed his own work and left an inscription on the wall – “Art is alive and independent”.
