The opposition has postponed joint protests and scheduled picketing of state institutions. The relevant decision was announced following today’s meeting at the office of the United National Movement party, where plans regarding the form of anti-government protests were discussed.
Opposition representatives note that the scheduled protests have been postponed for a two-week deadline set by European Council President Charles Michel to allow the holding of negotiations and the chance to reach an agreement between parties.
Tina Bokuchava, a member of the United National Movement, stated that the rally scheduled for March 13 has been postponed to March 20, while the rest of the rallies will be modified.
She noted that tomorrow, at 13:00, a procession will be held from Republic Square to Rustavi Prison, where Chairman of the UNM Nika Melia is serving a sentence.
“It is very important for the United National Movement that the opposition act together, including in organizing protests.
“At today’s meeting at the UNM office, we discussed and decided to modify the form of the protests so that Garibashvili and Ivanishvili would not use the protests as an excuse to disrupt the talks initiated by the President of the European Council Charles Michel,” Bokuchava noted.
Representatives of opposition parties and their supporters have been holding demonstrations in Tbilisi since the detention of UNM Leader Nika Melia in order to express their protest against the ruling of the incumbent government.
The protests concern election fraud, the economic crisis, and the existence of political prisoners in the country.
