EU Urges All Parties in Georgia to Work Together, Find Common Language

“Political stability, with all sides avoiding provocative actions and rhetoric, and an inclusive parliamentary process… are prerequisites for Georgia to further deepen its partnership with the EU.” Peter Stano

Lead EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Peter Stano made a statement on the current developments in Georgia and said that polarization poses a threat to Georgia’s democracy.

Stano said in a statement that the arrest of Nika Melia, the leader of the opposition party, the United National Movement, would deepen the polarization.

The EU calls on all parties to work together to find a common language.

“Starting with those in power, we expect the Government to provide inclusive leadership, putting the interests of the Georgian people first. A fair, independent and accountable judiciary is also paramount. The European Union will remain very attentive to developments in this regard.

“It is crucial that the opposition plays a constructive role, including by joining the Parliament, to further consolidate democracy and the rule of law in Georgia, and to help shape the country’s reform path.

Protests sparked following Melia’s arrest/Reginfo

“Political stability, with all sides avoiding provocative actions and rhetoric, an inclusive parliamentary process, as well as a judicial system that enjoys the trust of the Georgian citizens are prerequisites for Georgia to further deepen its partnership with the EU in line with the Association Agreement,” said Stano in a statement.

The spokesperson noted that the EU will support Georgia in this effort.
