Construction has begun on the nine-kilometer Shkmeri–Mravaldzali secondary road in Georgia’s Oni Municipality, the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure announced.
Ministry says the project is being implemented under a Georgian government decree and is considered a key infrastructure initiative for the Racha region.
Shkmeri and Mravaldzali, both located in the mountainous region of Racha, are known for their historical, cultural, and tourism significance. The villages are home to centuries-old churches, while Shkmeri also features a canyon, a karst cave, and other natural attractions that draw both domestic and international visitors.
The ministry said the existing gravel road has deteriorated significantly, making travel difficult for residents and tourists. Dust poses a problem during dry weather, while rain further worsens driving conditions.
Once completed, the upgraded road is expected to provide safer and more comfortable travel, improve access to the area, support tourism development, and create new economic opportunities for the region.
The project is valued at nearly GEL 23 million and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
