Tbilisi City Court Judge Tamar Epitashvili has released Nikoloz Khurtsilava, who is accused of attacking civil activist and comedian Onise Okriashvili, on GEL 5,000 bail.
The Prosecutor’s Office requested bail, arguing that Khurtsilava had confessed to the alleged crime and that the risk of reoffending was low.
Okriashvili was attacked by several people near his home on July 22.
Dimitri Samkharadze, a member of the ruling Georgian Dream party’s Political Council, said he was prepared to stand surety for Khurtsilava.
Okriashvili and his supporters allege that the attack followed a campaign against the activist by pro-government media and ruling party figures.
