Georgia’s State Security Service has launched an investigation into two nationwide power outages, opening a case under Article 318 of the Criminal Code, which covers sabotage.
The agency says the investigation concerns the recent emergency incidents that disrupted electricity supplies across the country. Under Georgian law, sabotage includes disrupting the normal operation of a state enterprise, institution, organization, or other strategically important facility with the aim of harming the state’s interests, as well as damaging or destroying such facilities.
“The State Security Service will provide the public with information about the progress and results of the investigation in stages,” the agency said.
The first incident occurred on July 24 at around 00:10, when an emergency in Georgia’s power system disrupted electricity and telecommunications networks. The outage temporarily left Tbilisi and most regions of the country without electricity.
A second nationwide outage occurred at around 08:00 on July 25, when an emergency briefly interrupted electricity supplies across Georgia.
