The European Union has imposed sanctions on 15 individuals and one Russian penal institution over their involvement in the abuse of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilian detainees.
The Council of the European Union adopted the restrictive measures on July 13, targeting those deemed responsible for serious human rights violations related to the treatment of Ukrainian military personnel and civilian detainees held in Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine and in Russia.
Council says the sanctions are aimed at individuals linked to torture, inhumane treatment and other abuses committed against Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians during Russia’s war against Ukraine. The measures also target a Russian penal institution implicated in those violations.
