Opposition politician Zviad Kuprava sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison

Opposition politician Zviad Kuprava has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison after being found guilty of charges related to calling for the overthrow of the state government.

The ruling was delivered by Judge Tamar Mchedlishvili of the Tbilisi City Court.

Kuprava had been charged under Articles 317 and 353 of the Criminal Code of Georgia. The charges included publicly calling for the violent change of Georgia’s constitutional order and the overthrow of the state government, as well as resisting a law enforcement officer with the aim of preventing the officer from carrying out official duties.

The court found Kuprava guilty and imposed a prison sentence of two years and six months.

The case has drawn attention amid ongoing tensions between the Georgian authorities and opposition figures, with critics accusing the government of using criminal proceedings against political opponents, while the authorities maintain that prosecutions are conducted in accordance with the law.
