Health minister: exploiting sick children’s suffering for politics is ‘disgusting’

Georgia’s Health Minister, Mikheil Sarjveladze, has sharply criticised politicians he accuses of using the suffering of seriously ill children and their families for political gain, calling such actions “disgusting” and unacceptable.

Speaking in Parliament during his concluding remarks under the interpellation procedure, Sarjveladze addressed the issue of access to medication for children diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

“I would never, in my life, stoop to what I am witnessing from some politicians—parasitising on these children’s tragedy, their severe condition and their parents’ despair to score political points. I don’t know what could be worse. This is filth, this is disgrace, and it must not be tolerated,” the minister said.

Sarjveladze also accused critics of spreading false narratives and attempting to create a misleading impression of conflict between the government and affected families.

He stressed that the state’s priority is to ensure timely access to essential medicines for children in need, adding that all decisions in this regard are driven by real medical necessity rather than political considerations.

“The state will do everything possible to ensure these families receive the medication they need—not for political points, but for real treatment,” he said.

The minister concluded by expressing hope for the recovery of all children facing serious health conditions, saying he sincerely wishes them the same health and well-being as his own children.
