The Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia and Parliament are working on a new legislative initiative that will consolidate seven existing education-related laws into a single code.

Education Minister Givi Mikanadze says one of the key changes in the draft law will be the introduction of European practice, under which diplomas issued by vocational schools will be recognized as credits in higher education institutions in the same field.

The Minister says a special working group has been operating for more than two months, bringing together experts from different areas of education, and that the ministry is working closely with parliamentary committees.

Mikanadze says the draft law is expected to be submitted either during the autumn or spring parliamentary session, depending on the final pace of work.

He says the reform aims to increase the prestige of vocational education and make it easier for vocational students to transition into higher education, affecting 29 state vocational colleges across the country.

“One of the important components of this bill is that in the vocational direction… diplomas issued by vocational schools be recognized as credits in higher education institutions in the same directions,” the Minister said.
