Georgia’s Ambassador to the United States, Tamar Taliashvili, was summoned to the US Department of State after ruling party officials accused a foreign embassy of financing unrest in Georgia, Radio Liberty reports.
The outlet claims that American officials conveyed “deep concern” regarding the remarks made by members of the Georgian Dream government, who alleged that funding for a “revolution” in Georgia was being channeled from Thailand.
A spokesperson for the US Embassy in Georgia told Radio Liberty: “We are deeply concerned that senior Georgian government officials are irresponsibly spreading false information, released by the media, which has led to a campaign of harassment and intimidation of the public, which is based entirely on false information.”
The controversy stems from a statement by Georgian Dream parliamentary leader Mamuka Mdinaradze, who claimed that “the embassy of one of the countries is funding radicals against the government in Georgia from Thailand.”
