The United Kingdom reaffirmed strong support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity but expressed concern over Georgian Dream’s distancing from Euro-Atlantic cooperation, warning that the Russian threat—especially in cyberspace—remains.
In a statement, the UK Embassy highlighted joint efforts with Georgia to boost cyber resilience and confirmed past Russian cyberattacks, including a 2019 GRU-led assault on Georgian institutions.
The UK, alongside the EU, NATO, and international partners, condemned Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics and imposed sanctions on four organizations and 21 GRU agents. These include a unit linked to the deadly 2022 missile strike on Mariupol’s theater and leaders of Russia’s ‘Africa Initiative,’ accused of spreading disinformation to undermine global health programs.
The UK emphasized that such hybrid operations—including cyberattacks and disinformation—are central to Russia’s broader campaign to destabilize Europe and continue its aggression against Ukraine.
Despite continued collaboration with Georgia on cybersecurity, the UK notes a troubling political shift away from Western alignment.
