Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said that although snow is not unusual for the capital, he recognized that the heavy snowfall in recent days had created a number of problems for residents and caused damage to infrastructure.
Kaladze stated that the city authorities had prepared in advance for the expected snowfall and that all relevant municipal services were mobilized.
“Snow is certainly not unusual for our city, which is why we always meet the winter season prepared. We held a video conference in advance because heavy snowfall was expected, and we were fully ready. All relevant services — from district administrations to infrastructure teams — were prepared with special equipment and personnel, and work was carried out around the clock,” Kaladze said.
Mayor claimed that the intense snowfall last weekend caused a range of difficulties across the city, among them numerous cases of fallen trees and damaged electricity poles were recorded, while the National Botanical Garden of Georgia also suffered damage to parts of its plant and tree collection.
Kaladze added that retaining walls collapsed at several locations, infrastructure was damaged, and residents experienced transport and mobility problems in various parts of the capital.
Municipal services continue working to address the consequences of the snowfall and restore normal conditions in affected areas.
