Aleko Elisashvili, one of the leaders of Strong Georgia, accused of political persecution, is free. The measure of pre-trial detention imposed on him has been replaced by 4,000-GEL bail.
The aforementioned decision was made by Tbilisi City Court Judge Levan Gelovani, who partially satisfied the motion of the prosecutor’s office.
Aleko Elisashvili was released from the courtroom. Members of Elisashvili’s team and politicians gathered in the court.
The court was applied with a motion to change the pre-trial detention of Aleko Elisashvili by the prosecutor’s office.
Prosecutor Ana Metreveli stated in her motion that the prosecution believes that there are still threats of new crimes, destruction of evidence and influence on witnesses. However, according to the prosecution, the threats are no longer of a high level and detention is less necessary.
Lawyers Giorgi Rekhviashvili and Vakhtang Kvizhinadze did not agree with the bail motion, since they said that Elisashvili had not committed a crime.
For information, Aleko Elisashvili was charged under Article 156, Part 2, Subparagraph “a” of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which provides for up to three years of imprisonment.
The incident occurred on December 2. According to the prosecutor’s office, Elisashvili verbally and physically abused Ali Babaev, the chairman of the Azerbaijani National Congress and one of the founders of the Georgian Dream for Democratic Georgia party, on the territory adjacent to Kostava Street in Tbilisi.
