Member of the European Parliament Rasa Juknevičienė has stated that political prisoners have no place in a country aspiring to join the European Union, commenting on the recent court ruling that sentenced Droa party leader Elene Khoshtaria.
Reacting to the decision, Juknevičienė said Khoshtaria had been sentenced to one year and six months in prison and emphasized that the European Parliament stands in full solidarity with the Georgian people and what she described as political prisoners.
“Just now, Elene Khoshtaria was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison. The European Parliament expresses full solidarity with the Georgian people and political prisoners, as it reiterated in its March resolution,” the MEP wrote on X.
On March 12, the European Parliament adopted a resolution titled “The case of Elene Khoshtaria and political prisoners under the ‘Georgian Dream’ regime,” which strongly condemns what it describes as politically motivated detention.
The resolution criticizes the imprisonment of Khoshtaria and other individuals for exercising freedom of expression and peaceful protest, and also denounces what it calls the systematic criminal prosecution of political opponents, journalists, and activists.
Elene Khoshtaria was found guilty by Tbilisi City Court judge Giorgi Arevadze in a case related to damage to an election banner and was sentenced to one year and six months in prison.
