Prosecutor’s Office reiterates willingness to meet Giga Avaliani’s family amid ongoing investigation

The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has once again stated its readiness to meet with the family members of Giga Avaliani at any time, following a public statement issued by the family regarding the ongoing criminal investigation.

In an official response, the Prosecutor’s Office emphasized that it is prepared to provide the family with detailed explanations of all investigative actions carried out so far, as well as the legal grounds on which the actions of the detained individuals have been classified.

“The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia responds to the statement of Giga Avaliani’s family and once again expresses its readiness to meet with the family members of Giga Avaliani at any time,” the statement reads. “We are prepared to explain in detail each investigative action and the legal basis for the legal qualifications assigned to the actions of the individuals detained as a result of those investigative measures.”

The agency further stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and that accountability is not limited to the individuals currently charged. Based on the statement, if new evidence or legal grounds emerge during the course of the investigation, criminal prosecution against additional individuals will be initiated.

Due to the high level of public interest surrounding the case, the Prosecutor’s Office also provided clarification regarding the current procedural status. The criminal case is being handled by the Gldani-Nadzaladevi Main Division of the Tbilisi Police Department under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia.

To date, four minors have been detained and formally charged in connection with the case. One of the detainees has been charged under Part 2 of Article 117 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which concerns intentional grave bodily harm resulting in death. The remaining three minors have been charged under Part 1 of Article 376 of the Criminal Code, which refers to failure to report a crime by a person who reliably knows that a grave crime is being prepared or has already been committed.

The statement also notes that investigative proceedings continue separately within the Ministry of Internal Affairs under a distinct criminal case, indicating that additional investigative steps are still underway.

The case has sparked significant public discussion and concern, particularly due to the involvement of minors and the serious nature of the charges. Authorities maintain that the investigation is being conducted in accordance with Georgian law and that all relevant circumstances will be assessed comprehensively.

Giga Avaliani, a minor, died as a result of severe injuries sustained during a violent incident in Tbilisi, which sparked widespread public concern and debate. Investigators note that the case involves a group of minors, four of whom have been detained. One suspect is charged with intentional grave bodily harm resulting in death, while three others face charges for failure to report a serious crime. The investigation is being conducted by law enforcement authorities and remains ongoing, with officials stating that additional prosecutions are possible should new evidence emerge. The case has drawn heightened public attention due to the age of those involved and questions raised by the victim’s family regarding the course and scope of the investigation.
