Authorities have started monitoring operations at four mines in Chiatura municipality amid ongoing worker protests.

As the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported, specialists and representatives of Georgian Manganese’s subsidiary, Chiatura Management Company LLC, will evaluate the situation on April 30 at the Korokhnali, Shukruti, Itkhvisi, and Darkveti mines.

“In recent periods, some of the employees in the mines in Chiatura Municipality have been expressing protest,” the Ministry said. “Therefore, in order to maintain the rule of law and ensure safety, employees of the relevant units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will be mobilized on site.”

The protests center around working conditions, though specific demands have not yet been made public.

The Ministry also urged demonstrators to act lawfully, warning that “each fact of violation will be followed by an appropriate legal response from the side of police.”
