Armenia’s ruling party, Civil Contract, has officially nominated incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan as its candidate for prime minister in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7, 2026.
Pashinyan will also head the party’s electoral list.
Prime Minister says the decision followed two rounds of internal voting within the party. He secured overwhelming support, receiving 898 votes. Other candidates received significantly fewer votes in what was largely seen as a symbolic contest: Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan garnered 12 votes, while Defense Minister Suren Papikyan received 8.
The upcoming vote will be Armenia’s second parliamentary election since the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, and the first since Azerbaijan established control over Stepanakert (Khankendi), the de facto capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, following a military operation in 2023.
Among Pashinyan’s main challengers are the “Armenia Alliance” led by former President Robert Kocharyan, which currently holds 29 seats in the 101-member parliament; the “Strong Armenia” party linked to detained businessman Samvel Karapetyan; and “Prosperous Armenia,” led by businessman Gagik Tsarukyan.
In recent statements, Pashinyan has repeatedly warned that an opposition victory could put Armenia at risk of war.
International attention has also focused on the elections. During a visit to Armenia on February 9, 2026, US Vice President JD Vance expressed support for Pashinyan ahead of the vote.
Meanwhile, mid-March, EU foreign ministers backed the deployment of a “rapid response hybrid team” to Armenia to help counter foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI).
