The Parliament overturned the President’s veto on the bill “On transparency of foreign influence”. The project, presented by the Georgian Dream faction and vetoed by Salome Zurabishvili, was supported by 84 votes.
Initially, the vote was based on the project proposed by Salome Zurabishvili, according to which the law “On the transparency of foreign influence” was supposed to be valid for only one day. The President’s project “failed” with a vote of 0-for, 66-against.
After that, the project of the Georgian Dream faction, which was approved by the Parliament in three readings, was put to the vote, which was supported by 84 votes (4 against).
The draft law “On the transparency of foreign influence” will be sent to the President for his signature once again. The law must be submitted to the president within three days, who has a five-day deadline to sign it. If Salome Zurabishvili does not sign the law again within the set deadline, it will be signed and published by the chairman of the parliament within 5 days.
After the publication of the law, the Ministry of Justice and the National Public Registry Agency must create a register of “organizations carrying out the interests of a foreign power” within 60 days. After the registry is launched, registration in it becomes mandatory for all non-governmental and media organizations, whose income is more than 20% from abroad.
