It is unfortunate that Georgia is not moving closer to the European Union but instead drifting away, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said in Brussels ahead of the European Council summit.
Nausėda claimed that recent developments in Georgia do not align with European democratic standards. He said he was concerned by the situation, noting that despite the geographical distance between the two countries, Lithuania and Georgia share close historical and traditional ties.
“Unfortunately, what is happening in Georgia does not correspond to the European understanding of democracy or democratic rules,” Nausėda said. “Until it is recognized that democratic principles, human rights, and the rule of law must be respected, the situation will remain difficult.”
