During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Washington is actively discussing possible measures against Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party, though no official decisions have been announced yet.
Responding to Congressman Joe Wilson’s sharp criticism of the Georgian government, Rubio stated, “That is something that’s being discussed.” He emphasized that any actions would be based on US national interests, adding, “We will look at that and say, is it our national interest to have an anti-American government governing an important part of the world? And if not, we’ll take appropriate actions to impose costs on that government.”
Congressman Wilson described Georgian Dream as an “anti-American regime,” accusing it of election rigging, criminalizing US ties, undermining American businesses, blocking trade through the Middle Corridor, and collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party. He highlighted a recent Rondeli Foundation report on Chinese influence in Georgia and praised the ongoing pro-Western protests, noting that demonstrators have embraced American flags and posters of the US president.
Rubio reiterated that the situation in Georgia is under review and that guidance from regional experts and the US mission on the ground will help determine what actions the Georgian government might be most responsive to.
