The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry has condemned the arrest of Nika Melia, a primary figure of Georgia’s opposition party ‘Coalition for Change,’ calling it part of a bigger campaign on dissent by the ruling Georgian Dream party.
“We deplore the arrest of Nika Melia, one of the leaders of the ‘Coalition for Change’,” the Ministry stated on X, calling on authorities in Tbilisi to stop their “ongoing crackdown against civil society and opposition in Georgia.”
In a clear message of solidarity, Lithuania reinforced its support for the Georgian people: “Our solidarity goes to the Georgian people standing for European values.”
The statement further signals already growing international criticism of what many view as increasing authoritarian tendencies within the Georgian government.
