Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze says negotiations with the Chinese-Singaporean consortium selected for the Anaklia deep-sea port project are ongoing, with a final cooperation model expected to be determined in the coming months.
Speaking at a government administration press conference on May 25, Kobakhidze said work on a detailed investment agreement between the Georgian government and the consortium is continuing.
“The negotiations are ongoing,” Kobakhidze said. “Very soon, in the coming months, a decision should be made regarding a specific model for continuing cooperation.”
On May 29, 2024, the Georgian government announced that a Chinese-Singaporean consortium led by China Communications Construction Company would acquire a 49% stake in the Anaklia Deep Sea Port project.
However, the final agreement has not yet been signed and the parties are still negotiating the investment framework.
Kobakhidze said there are currently no plans to launch a new selection process, adding that the project is already underway and there is no need to “artificially accelerate” negotiations at this stage.
He also said completion of the first phase of the Anaklia port by 2029 is “absolutely realistic.”
Kobakhidze added that parallel work is also continuing on related railway and road infrastructure connected to the port project.
