The so-called Supreme Court of Abkhazia, a region occupied by Russia, has sentenced Kakha Muradov to 15 years in prison on charges of “espionage in favor of Georgia.” Muradov, who was arrested on April 24, 2024, in Gagra, did not plead guilty to the accusations, according to the de facto prosecutor’s office.
The de facto security service of Abkhazia claimed that Muradov, a dual citizen of Georgia and Abkhazia, was suspected of “high treason in favor of Georgia.” Authorities allege he was connected to the Abkhazian underground movement and acted to support Georgia’s territorial integrity.
Muradov reportedly worked for the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs between 1994 and 1999. The de facto security service stated that he had connections with paramilitary groups active during the 1990s, including former commanders of the group “Mkhedrioni.”
Despite the high-profile nature of the case, nine months have passed since Muradov’s arrest without any official comment from the Georgian government.
