Jaba Samushia has been elected acting rector of Tbilisi State University (TSU). He was the only candidate for the position.
The acting rector has been elected by the Academic Council by secret ballot, with the majority of members, for a term of no more than 6 months.
The process took place amidst a tense protest of students at the university, the security service mobilized on the spot.
The students gathered at the 107th auditorium to demand a change in the procedure for electing the rector, construction of a dormitory for students and a housing subsidy. According to them, Jaba Samushia was pre-selected for the position of acting rector and had been congratulated on his appointment to the position in advance.
TSU rector Giorgi Sharvashidze applied to the Academic Council for his resignation on October 7.
