The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Georgia, Seyed Ali Moujani, has responded to recent remarks by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding Georgia, saying that the United States should “correct its view of the world.”
In a post published on Facebook, Moujani criticized Washington’s approach to international affairs.
“I think America should correct its view of the world. A country that seeks to destroy other civilizations should first correct itself,” the Iranian ambassador wrote.
His comments came after Rubio expressed hope that the United States would see a change in Georgia’s current trajectory and an improvement in bilateral relations.
Speaking during a hearing in the US House of Representatives, Rubio responded to a question from Congressman Joe Wilson, who accused the ruling Georgian Dream party of aligning itself with Iran and China and asked what should be done to address what he described as the government’s “rapid radicalization” of Georgia.
Rubio said the concerns raised by Wilson reflected Washington’s existing concerns about developments in Georgia. At the same time, he noted that the Georgian government had taken certain steps indicating a desire to improve relations with the United States.
Secretary of State, Washington outlined what it expected from the Georgian authorities and subsequently received “some positive responses.”
“Our hope is that we’ll see a change in the trajectory that we have in Georgia today,” Rubio said, adding that Georgian officials had asked what would be necessary to improve ties with the United States.
Rubio also expressed hope that the ongoing dialogue could lead not only to an improvement in US-Georgia relations but also to changes in the behavior of the Georgian government.
