Honorary Patriarch of Ukraine Filaret has passed away at the age of 97, based on an announcement by the head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epiphanius.
In a statement, Metropolitan Epiphanius expressed deep sorrow over the Patriarch’s death, noting the profound impact of his life and service.
“Today, my heart, like the hearts of many Ukrainians, is filled with great sorrow… The earthly path of His Holiness Patriarch Filaret has come to an end,” the statement reads.
Filaret was one of the most influential religious figures in Ukraine’s modern history, playing a key role in the establishment and development of the independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
