Georgian immunologist, professor, and doctor of medical sciences Tengiz Tsertsvadze, the founder of the HIV/AIDS service in Georgia and general director of the Center for Infectious Pathology, AIDS, and Clinical Immunology, has died at the age of 76.
His relatives say Tengiz Tsertsvadze had been ill.
Tsertsvadze was the general director of the Center for Infectious Pathology, AIDS and Clinical Immunology, a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, a member of the American Infectious Diseases Society, one of the main initiators of the state hepatitis C elimination program, a holder of the Presidential Order of Merit and Excellence. On October 3, 2020, along with eight doctors fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, he was awarded the title of honorary citizen of Tbilisi.
