Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday emphasized the importance for “intensive work” to advance Tbilisi’s new airport and stadium projects during a government meeting.
“We have very ambitious plans, and we must actively start implementing these projects without delay. Each day and every week is crucial in ensuring we meet our objectives,” the Prime Minister remarked. He specifically called for swift progress on the new airport, noting that the first phase must be completed as quickly as possible, followed by full implementation. “We have announced the airport project, and it is crucial that we work as intensively as possible to complete the first phase quickly, followed by full implementation,” he added.
Kobakhidze also touched on the stadium project, highlighting the importance of sticking to a strict timeline. “It is essential that not a single day and not a single week [of work] is failed to finish the stadium on time and host the final of the [UEFA] Champions League, which is our ambitious goal,” he said.
The Prime Minister unveiled plans for a new “ultra-modern” international airport in Tbilisi last spring. The new facility will be built at a former military airfield in Vaziani, located just outside the city, and is designed to accommodate up to 20 million passengers annually. Currently, the existing airport in Tbilisi serves around 4.5 million passengers per year, but with tourism and international business expected to grow, the new airport will help meet the rising demand. Kobakhidze explained that the airport is intended to enhance both passenger traffic and cargo shipments, ensuring increased international connectivity for the country.
In addition to the airport, the second major project involves the construction of a 70,000-capacity football stadium in Tbilisi. The stadium’s primary goal is to host the 2028 UEFA Champions League final, positioning Georgia’s capital as a key destination for international football.
