On August 28, the Georgian Orthodox Church celebrates one of its most important feasts—Virgin Mary Day, known as Mariamoba. The holiday, which commemorates the assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven, is also recognized as a public holiday in Georgia.
To mark the occasion, solemn liturgies and special services are held in churches and monasteries throughout the country, with a festive liturgy traditionally taking place at the Sioni Cathedral in Tbilisi.
