As we step into a new year, we’d like to wish all our GEORGIA TODAY readers a very happy, healthy, and hopeful New Year. Whether you’ve been with us for years or only recently discovered us online or via our weekly newspaper or business magazine, thank you for your loyalty, your curiosity, and your continued support. We wouldn’t be here without you.
One of the things we love most about life in Georgia is that there’s always something happening. No matter the season, the calendar is dotted with cultural festivals, food and wine celebrations, religious holidays, and local traditions that bring people together. To help you keep track of it all, below, we’ll link to a calendar for the festive season 2025-2026 that brings together the major events, celebrations, and milestones that shape the year ahead — and we hope it proves useful as you plan your travels and adventures.
The year doesn’t begin quietly here. In fact, the New Year period stretches well into January with traditions that are deeply rooted in Georgian Orthodox culture. Mekvleloba, which begins at midnight on January 1, centers on the belief that the first person to cross your threshold will influence your luck for the year ahead. The next day, Bedoba, often called the “day of fate,” is all about setting the right tone — spending time with loved ones, doing things that bring you joy, and starting the year on a positive note.
You’ll also notice sweets being exchanged between friends and neighbors during this time, a small but meaningful gesture symbolizing happiness, youthfulness, and prosperity. If you’re invited into someone’s home, a box of chocolates is always a welcome addition.
Orthodox Christmas comes on January 7, marked by the beautiful Alilo processions held across the country. These parades fill the streets with chanting and song, while participants collect donations to support those in need.
Old New Year, celebrated on January 14, offers one last chance to gather, reflect, and celebrate before the year fully settles in.
If you’d like to explore these traditions — and many more events throughout the year — in more detail, the WanderLush blog has plenty of inspiration and practical information on New Year customs and festivals across Georgia.
Here’s to a year filled with memorable moments, meaningful connections, and plenty of reasons to celebrate. Happy New Year from all of us at GEORGIA TODAY!
