The Georgian Competition and Consumer Agency (GCCA) has begun a comprehensive review of the country’s medical services market with the goal to assess its competition as healthcare costs rise.
National Statistics Office of Georgia shared data revealing that medical service prices jumped 26% in July 2025 compared to the same month last year, raising concerns about affordability and fair competition.
Scope of monitoring
The GCCA’s assessment will examine the market through parameters set out in competition legislation, including:
- Market size and structure
- Number of active companies
- Concentration index
- Market shares and market dynamics
- Presence or absence of dominant positions
Collaboration and transparency
The monitoring will be carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia. Results will be published to ensure both public transparency and stakeholder engagement.
Broader Context
This initiative is the extension of GCCA’s earlier monitoring of the pharmaceutical market and its related investigations, emphasizing the agency’s ongoing focus on the healthcare sector. Beyond healthcare, the GCCA is currently overseeing competition in several other industries, including:
- FMCG
- Auto fuel
- Pesticides and agrochemicals
- Tobacco
- Hazelnuts
- Blueberries
